Recipe for Success dishes plates of praise on H-E-B president Scott McClellandand chef Randy Evans
Two top toques in the world of food — though in two very different arenas — received high honors at the Recipe for Success annual Harvest Market and Awards Luncheon, held at The Houstonian.
H-E-B's Scott McClelland received the Mayor's Award: Champion of Food Justice, presented by Mayor Annise Parker. He was recognized for his successful efforts at expanding affordable/healthy food access for Houstonians across the city and for his work with the Houston Food Bank.
Haven chef Randy Evans was honored with the Blue Plate Special: Chef of the Year award, presented to him by last year's recipient t'afia chef Monica Pope. A member of the Recipe for Success Chef's Advisory Board, Evans has participated in the Seed-to-Plate program at MacGregor Elementary School since 2006.
Also recognized were Golden Whisk Volunteer of the Year Eileen Hatcher and Golden Whisk Teacher of the Year Mary Stuart.
Taking lead roles in the lunch were chairs Karen and Roland Garcia, Recipe for Success founder Gracie Cavnar and emcee Deborah Duncan. They were among those lapping up the yummy tastings that were part of the mouth-watering Harvest Market that took place before and after the luncheon program.
Guests could sample (and purchase) a variety of cheeses from Houston Dairymaids, exotic chocolates from Richard Kaplan's Brown Paper Chocolates, Texas olive oils and taste treats from Angela's Oven.
Joining the luncheon throng were Harris County Attorney Vince Ryan, BMC Software's Dan D'Armond, Phyllis Childress, Cathy Brock, Merele Yarborough, Melissa King, Laura Spanjian, Soraya McClelland, Cyndy Garza, Winell Herron and Armando Perez.
