The ladies of the CAMH celebrate 20 years of hunting for art treasures
A lesson from Tuesday evening — don't get in the way of the serious-minded "treasure hunters" attending Another Great Night in November.
For two decades, the otherwise lady-like patrons of the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston have put their heads together in teams and bustled through some very grand, art-filled homes in search of the correct answers to a lengthy cultural quiz. They take it very seriously — for both the prestige of winning and for the prizes. This week's event was no exception.
The River Oaks home of Marita and J.B. Fairbanks welcomed close to 300 well-heeled women who poured through the 1930s-era dwelling in search of answers to questions such as "Who was the artist of the commissioned video chandelier?" or "What is the common name for the pattern that appears in the wood paneling around the front door?"
The winners of the contest with all the right answers had dubbed their table "The Art Gals" and all 12 went home with various accessories from Tory Burch, which provided fashions for the dinner-hour presentation. They were so excited at their success that the gorgeous and very athletic Heidi Gergerjumped on the table in glee. Applauding their own artful intelligence were Henrietta Alexander, Kerry Inman, Claudia Schmuckli-Drutt, Cristiana Anderson, Lea Weingarten, Betty Newton, Judy Nyquist, Ann Wilde, Louise Bland, Julie Kinzelman and Gisela Cherches.
Also big winners were dinner chairs — Leslie Ballard Hull, Kelly Hamman and Nyquist. The 20th anniversary evening raised a record $207,000. It was a beautiful evening with the ladies dining in a grand party tent, with the fine dinner and planning done by A Fare Extraordinaire's talented Karen Lerner.
The glory of this night is traditionally as much about the impressive old guard turnout as it is about the focus on art. Among the venerable contingent were Isabel Wilson, Sissy Kempner, Carol Ballard, Jennie Hull, Janet Cockrell, Melinda Perrin, Sally Avery, Cornelia Long, CeCe Fowler, Susie Criner, Betty Newton, Ann Hamman and on and on.
It was an impressive collection of notable femmes no matter how you looked at it with guests that included Poppi Massey, Anne Stewart, Barbara Goot-Gamson, Cynthia Petrello, Diane Lokey-Farb, Annie Criner, Nancy Abendshein, Stacy Soriero, Laura Sweeney, Cathy Brock and Lisa Holthouse.
