Houston Children's Charity's Grease-themed bash with Olivia Newton-John scores$1.2 million
The gal's still got it. Just ask the crowd that packed the ballroom of the Hyatt Regency Houston as they turned out to hear Olivia Newton-John and to support Houston Children's Charity.
Appearing slender and ever-youthful in her stylish tux costume, Newton-John pleased with her familiar tunes and had the revelers (a number in poodle skirts and letter jackets) on their feet and filling the dance floor. The costuming was in tribute to the gala theme, "Grease Is the Word," and a nod to the much-appreciated option of dressing black-tie or a la characters from the Hollywood film.
While Newton-John scored on stage, Houston Children's Charity hit the jackpot across the ballroom as proceeds passed the $1.2 million mark, thanks to underwriting, auctions and big board bidding. A big chunk of change came from auction of the BMW 3 Series, a gift from Momentum BMW Southwest and West.
In the spotlight were gala honorees Lori and Dan Wolterman, Memorial Hermann Healthcare System CEO; Paige and Tilman Fertitta, HCC board chair; emcee Dave Ward of KTRK Channel 13; and Laura Ward, HCC executive director and gala chair.
Grooving to the retro music were David Huntington, Trini Mendenhall Sosa and Frank Sosa, Edna Meyer-Nelson, Arvia and Jason Few, Melissa and Brad Juneau, Gary Becker, Anita and Gerald Smith, Margaret Williams and Jim Daniel and the beyond generous Amber and Steve Mostyn. The trial lawyer and his wife picked up three of the live auction items, not the least of which was the dazzling jewel-embellished necklace created by Franco Valobrafor the gala.
