Old guard Houston families step up in River Oaks, raise $530,000 to help HoustonHospice
The old guard stepped out in style for the 14th annual Laura Lee Blanton Community Spirit Award Dinner and in the process raised more than $530,000 for Houston Hospice.
Representation from old Houston families began at River Oaks Country Club with dinner chairs Rose and Harry Cullen and continued through a long list of notables not the least of whom were Ginger and Jack Blanton, whose late wife, Laura Lee Blanton, is namesake of the award.
The evening honored Doug Pitcock, chairman and CEO of Williams Brothers Construction Co., one of the largest federal aid highway construction companies in the nation. Pitcock, along with his late wife Puddie, has been active for decades as a community leader and philanthropist who addressed many of the city's most challenging social needs. Introduced by Eddy Blanton, son of Laura Lee Blanton, Pitcock received a standing ovation as he approached the podium.
Among those applauding Pitcock for a life well lived were Jeanie Kilroy, Linda McReynolds, Pat Breen, Sally and Bob Thomas, Barbara and Corby Robertson, Bette and Leo Linbeck, Kay and Ned Holmes, Pam and Dr. David Ott, Kelli Blanton, Karen Rove and Jim Faucett, Houston Hospice CEO.
