Born heroin-addicted in prison, author shares incredible story of triumph at inaugural fundraiser
What: Santa Maria Hostel inaugural luncheon fundraiser.
Where: River Oaks Country Club.
The scoop: More than 260 guests turned out to raise $110,000 for the center that offers recovery for women and their children from various traumas including drug addiction, homelessness and abuse.
Guest speaker Deborah Jiang-Stein, founder of the "unPrison Project" and author of Prison Baby: A Memoir, shared her riveting story of triumph against the odds. She was born as a special needs, at-risk, heroin-addicted child in a federal prison. Today, she lives a life transformed as a writer, entrepreneur, mother and inventor.
The luncheon was chaired by Kelli Fondren and Lindsey Fondren Smith and honored Criminal District Court JudgeDenise Bradley. Lisa Malosky handled duties as emcee.
