The smell of success had the aroma of fresh paint on this River Oaks night andthat was a good thing
Paint cans filled with flowers as centerpieces and an artist on stage, magically and almost instantly creating three works, was all the symbolism needed to salute the prospect of painting a beautiful future for Dress for Success as the non-profit plans for its groundbreaking next week.
The "Powerful Women, Paintings and Philanthropy" evening at River Oaks Country Club celebrated that upcoming groundbreaking of the agency's new home at 3310 Eastside as well a the success of six clients, who told their stories of professional success after taking advantage of Dress for Success' career training resources and wardrobe enhancement.
For the second year Courtney Hopson, Marie Louise Kinder and Claire Sullivan Jackson chaired the evening that raised more than $345,000. No small part of the proceeds came from the auction action overseen by auction chairs Susie Cunningham, Berthica Fitzsimons, Bertha Sabir and Susie Streller, also reprising their roles from last year.
Artist Jean Francois of Extreme Art provided the entertainment with his rapid creation of three canvases using only his bare hands and vivid paint. What began as a confusing mass of color resulted in paintings of Tina Turner, a longhorn and the agency's new building.
Among the 250 guests applauding the artful demonstration were Lisa and Michael Holthouse, Kirby and Scott McCool, Cathy Fitzpatrick Cleary and Joe Cleary, Becky and Dick Roberts, Becca Cason Thrash, Kristy and Chris Bradshaw, Rosa and Willie Stanfield, Tali and Eric Blumrosen, Kara and Aaron Howes and Melissa and Michael Mithoff.
