The scoop: The only thing better than a night of tasting delicious fare from some of Houston’s top chefs? A night of tasting that benefits a good cause. Aid to Victims of Domestic Abuse (AVDA), a non-profit that works to end family violence by serving the survivor, the abuser and the community, recently held a fundraiser that showcased bites from 12 local culinary talents, including David Denis of Le Mistral; Paul Friedman of Peli Peli; Mark Holley of Holley’s Seafood Restaurant and Oyster Bar; John Sheely of Mockingbird Bistro; and Danny Trace of Brennan’s Houston.
Three hundred attendees turned out for the event, which honored attorney Richard Mithoff with the Joseph D. Jamail Award for Justice for his commitment to advocating for others, helping raise over $400,000 for AVDA.
Even if you missed the party, there’s still time to get in the game by participating in the DeAndre Hopkins’ #TDCHALLENGE. Along with Houston Texans’ wide receiver Hopkins, who will donate $1,000 to AVDA for every touchdown he scores in the month of October, Domestic Violence Awareness Month, you can score big by also making a charitable contribution to the non-profit via the AVDA website.
Though the Texas lost badly to Minnesota on Sunday, Hopkins scored a touchdown, his first this month, thus kickstarting his donation, which is being matched by a number of prominent Houstonians.
