Harvey Relief: Friends come together to raise funds for Houston Habitat for Humanity
What: Houston Habitat for Humanity fundraiser.
Where: FM Kitchen and Bar.
The scoop: Four young professional leaders in the Houston community came together to ask their friends and fellow Houstonians to support Hurricane Harvey relief efforts.
Regional vice president at Pacific Life insurance Tony Dabit, president at Scurfield Communications Group Nick Scurfield, Morgan Stanley financial advisor David Galic, and NAI Partners associate broker James Wilson organized the fundraiser, benefiting Houston Habitat for Humanity, a nonprofit that works to help build homes for local low-income families.
The event featured live music on the patio from two bands, The Tomes and If You Have to Ask, plus beer donated by 8th Wonder Brewery and several raffle and auction items including tickets to Texans, Astros, and Rockets games and gift certificates to Q Clothier Houston, SoulCycle, Bosscat Kitchen and Libations, and Riel Restaurant.
Taking a page out of J.J. Watt’s playbook, the hosts created a crowdfunding link on YouCaring.com. Including online and cash donations, more than $18,000 has been raised to date, surpassing the original goal of $15,000.
At least 176 Houston Habitat homes flooded during Harvey, with water 2 to 5 feet deep. Proceeds will offset the cost of construction materials (cabinets, flooring, baseboard) and subcontractors (electrical, painting, sheetrock).
“Our homeowners and staff are grateful for this needed support, and we look forward to using these funds to help Houston Habitat homeowners recover from Harvey’s devastation,” Houston Habitat executive director Allison Hay said in a statement.
Houston Habitat for Humanity is still welcoming contributions online. To donate, click here and designate funds to "flood relief."
