Volunteer season begins with sold-out events: The Junior League makes it fun
What would nine months of dedicated community work be without a little fun to launch the season? Just before the myriad volunteer assignments kicked into gear, the Junior League of Houston held its Opening Style Show, so popular that it extended over three time frames.
The first set in the Elizabeth Anthony/Esther Wolf style show trio, took place on Thursday in the ballroom of Junior League headquarters. Repeats followed with a dinner and style show Thursday night and a luncheon and style show on Friday. The event has proved so popular with Junior League Tea Room patrons, members and guests that the threepeat is a must to satisfy as many as 900 eager participants.
Organizing the fetes this year were special events chair Kristi Krupala, Tea Room director Shannon Beirne Wiesedeppe and Junior League of Houston president Catherine Nacol McCoin. Of course, Junior League Tea Room general manager Malcolm Rowland was on hand to welcome the ladies back from their summer vacations.
New this year, the league invited representatives from three non-profits served by the league — Dress for Success, the Children's Museum and the Houston Area Women's Center — to make presentations on the league's impact. With more than 5,000 members, many of whom make significant volunteer commitments under Junior League auspices, the impact in terms of both volunteer hours and dollars distributed by the league, the impact is widespread.
