The horrific blaze at the Southwest Inn on May 31 and the deadly, historic toll it took on Houston firefighters might have moved from the daily headlines, but those who were seriously injured remain as much in the minds of Houstonians as those whose lives were lost. The "Helping Those That Protect Us" fundraiser, set for July 18 at Smith & Wollensky in Highland Village is one example of the continuing outpouring of support for H-Town's first responders.
Nine community-minded women joined forces to organize the event from which all proceeds will go to the injured through accounts established by the Houston Texas Firefighters Federal Credit Union. Exercising their fundraising muscle are benefit chairs Ronna Lynn Farrell, Carra Fleming, Amanda Goodie, Ginger Marino, Abby Lestin, Joy Wuertz, April Zubizarreta, Lori Vismara and Angela Lipsey.
They've arranged for Houston Firefighter Calendar models with their beefy good looks to welcome guests who pony up $40 for entry. The tariff covers two drinks (wine or beer), plenty of appetizers, Smile Booth fun, a silent auction and music compliments of Wasi Townsend. Guests with first responder badges pay no admission and will receive four drink tickets. Doors open at 6 p.m.
