Staying alive: Heart Association #Tweetsforbeats social media fete ensures noone bites the dust
The rules of CPR are simple to remember: Push hard in the center of the chest, two-inches deep to the pulse of "Staying Alive." The 1970s tune, which churns out lyrics at 100 beats per minute, shall we say is a much better alternative than "Another One Bites the Dust," also set at the same tempo.
Mouth-to-mouth is optional, best carried out after 30 pumps.
That's what the 100 young professionals and the young at heart learned at the second annual #Tweetsforbeats social at Saint Arnold Brewing Company Wednesday night. Hosted by the American Heart Association, the tweetup collected cash to underwrite the purchase of CPR Anytime Kits for Fifth Ward residents, and encouraged the health conscious assemblage to tweet madly to raise social media love for the body's vital muscle.
At $25 a pop for a CPR practice dummy and an instructional DVD, it's a drop in the bucket to keep everyone breakin' and shakin'.
Courtesy of an endless flow of Saint Arnold's frosty suds and high-decibel folk grooves by the Holly Hicks Band, the informal crowd imbibed enough to break into the boxes of the board game Operation set up throughout the mess hall. Though after a few beers, shaky hands rendered the patients' fate not so encouraging.
Keeping with the wellness theme, Roots Bistro served a wholesome meatless fare of beets "for beats," squash pasta with cherry tomatoes and cilantro, kale risotto and roasted Brussels sprouts. All veggies, all gone, but not before digging into beer-infused sugary treats by A Sweet Intent.
