TIRR Memorial Hermann, home to Gabrielle Giffords, scores $2.2 million inblack-tie gala
Hope on many levels filled the ballroom of the Hilton Americas-Houston on Saturday night.
There was hope that the $2.2 million raised for TIRR Memorial Hermannn could lead to further medical advancements. There was hope that honoree Staman Ogilvie, who sustained a severe spinal cord injury in a bicycle accident in 2009, will walk by the time of his 70th birthday. And then there was hope that the rocking Wayne Foster Entertainment of Beverly HIlls would never leave the stage.
It was just that sort of night — one laced with the seriousness of the cause and one that inspired uninhibited partying on the dance floor.
Ogilvie was recognized not only for his courage in the face of his injury but also for his creation of the Ogilvie Fund, the goal of which is to raise $10 million for spinal cord research including stem cell therapy.
The ballroom was packed with more than 1,500 Memorial Hermann Foundation supporters who had come to party in the Havana-themed setting. White dinner jackets abounded and at least one guest carried Cuban cigars as necessary accessories. More than a few belles of the ball dressed in Latin-inspired red.
Taking bows for the gala's success were chairs Randa Duncan Williams and Susan Krohn, supported by their significant others Charles Williams and Patrick Gehm.
As has been tradition in recent years, the Rev. Kirbyjon Caldwell gave the official and always charming welcome while Memorial Hermann CEO Dan Wolterman made the presentation to Ogilvie.
Key figures in the mix included Memorial Hermann Healthcare System board chairman Robert Croyle Jr., Memorial Hermann Hospital System board chair Deborah Cannon, Memorial Hermann Foundation board chair Joe R. Davis and TIRR Memorial Hermann Board chair Don Elliott. Harris County Judge Ed Emmett and wife, Gwen, were among the notables.
Movers and shakers in the room included Dr. Don Kim, neurosurgeon for U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, plus Beverly Ogilvie, Sheridan and John Eddie Williams, Margaret Alkek Williams with Jim Daniel, Jan Duncan, Sherry and Jim Smith, Kay and Ned Holmes, Sofia Adrogué and Sten Gustafson, Laura and Dr. Mike Sweeney, Donna and Tony Vallone, Patrice Ferguson and John Camp, Mike and Karen Mayell, Jo Lynn and Gregg Falgout and Ileana and Michael Trevino.
