Rita Rudner beats Joan Rivers: Less caustic jokes and a record $825,000 forWomen's Center
Houston Area Women's Center supporters were kicking up their heels at the Omni Houston Hotel Four Riverway Friday evening with a generous crowd of 550 that raised a record $825,000. The fun was due in no small part to the resilient humor of comedian Rita Rudner.
After Joan Rivers' take-no-prisoners presentation at last year's fundraiser, Rudner was a breath of comedic fresh air offering more than 30 minutes of playful verbal antics. Add to the evening's levity, the sweet sound of an extra $70,000 or so falling into the kitty over last year.
The benefit dinner was chaired by Nancy and Bob Peiser and honored Beverly and Jim Postl, HAWC board member for eight years, and ExxonMobil, which provides volunteer and financial resources to the non-profit.
Among the evening’s sponsors and guests were Donna and Steve Greenlee, ExxonMobil Exploration president; Katherine McGovern; Soraya and Scott McClelland, H-E-B honcho; Humana exec Patti Dale Tye and Jim Tye; Royal Bank of Scotland managing director Kevin Howard; Alie and David Pruner; Nathalie and Bastiaan de Zeeuw; Betty and Steve Newton and Laura Bellows.
