A major movie star opens up about her drug addiction in Houston while raising $700,000
As 1,100 guests filed into the ballroom of the Hilton Americas-Houston, one could not help but note the continuing growth and success of the annual spring luncheon of The Council on Alcohol and Drugs Houston, this year raising $700,000. That is $200,000 more than last spring.
Council president and CEO Mel Taylor credited the success not only to the headline speaker,Jamie Lee Curtis, but also to the efforts of luncheon chairs Vivie and Chris O'Sullivan.
In her talk Curtis said, "My recovery from drug addiction is the single greatest accomplishment of my life because it broke the cycle of addiction in my family." She also praised June and Virgil Waggoner for founding the speakers series in memory of their late son, Jay Waggoner, who lost his battle with alcoholism.
The luncheon honored Howard Lester with the Jay Waggoner Service Award.
Notables in the crowd included Council board chairman Jeff Paine, and wife Paula Paine, Randa and Charlie Williams, Mindy Hildebrand, Ellen and Hank Bachmann, Judge Jo Ann Delgado, Judge Bonnie Hellums, Melinda and Greg Armstrong, Ginger and Jack Blanton and KPRC Channel 2 chief meteorologist Frank Billingsley.
