Fashionistas flock to the River Oaks tennis tournament, turning the gloom bright
Nothing challenges Houston fashionistas like the city's fickle weather. Case in point, the River Oaks tennis tournament luncheon, which is either delightfully held around the swimming pool or forced indoors due to an uncooperative Mother Nature. This week, the cool front propelled the fashion frolic into the country club ballroom.
The change of plans, however, failed to dampen the spirits of the festively-clad ladies, who packed the ballroom to the rafters in their spring frocks and poolside hats. Luncheon chair Alice Mosing kept her trademark cool through both days of the sold-out luncheon featuring the traditional Tootsies runway show. Even in the confined space, Lenny Matuszewski pulled off a vibrant fashion show that had the ladies making a quick dash to the West Ave emporium after dessert was served.
Tradition holds that the tournament director for River Oaks' U.S. Men's Clay Court Championship makes both days of the back-to-back luncheons and Van Barry filled the bill as have his predecessors.
Joining in this social centerpiece of the chichi tournament, which runs through Sunday at River Oaks Country Club, were Mary Eads, Laura Sweeney, Vesta Frommer, Nicole Zarr, Zeina Fares, Kelli Blanton, Dancie Ware, Catherine Herring and a sprinkling of couples including Joella and Steve Mach and Brenda Love and Ed Jones.
