A garden of dreams is fulfilled at Brookwood Community gala
Flower-filled topiaries, ivy intertwined in miniature lattices and dove-shaped votive candles, all produced by the citizens of Brookwood Community, transformed the Houston Country Club ballroom into a lush setting for the gala themed "An Evening in the Garden."
The flowers, candles and greenery served as a nod to the remarkable success of Brookwood, the non-profit residential/entrepreneurial center that creates meaningful work for adults with special needs. More than $750,000 was raised on this evening in support of the community located near Brookshire.
Chairs Celina Hellmund, Cynthia Petrello and Melinda Stubbs oversaw the genteel fundraiser that honored Dr. Huda Zoghbi for her work in neurological research at Texas Children's Hospital. She spoke on the shared goals of Texas Children's Neurological Research Institute, which she heads, and Brookwood – that of advancements in the field of disabilities.
Also honored were co-chairs of the 2009 "An Evening in the Garden" Mollie Castaneda, Mindy Hildebrand and Kay House.
The dinner gathering of 450 sat mesmerized as guest speaker Earle Martin, author of The Boy Who Saved My Life, shared remarks about his book chronicling the special bond that he shares with his autistic grandson.
The impressive turnout included Pat Breen, Franci and Jim Crane, Susie and Joe Dilg, Jan Duncan, Clayton and Shel Erikson, Diane Lokey Farb, Jeff Hildebrand, Tony Petrello, Sue and Lester Smith, Sam Stubbs, Lynn Wyatt and Shannon and Mark Wallace, Texas Children's Hospital CEO.
