What: High School for the Performing and Visual Arts 10th annual "Encore for Excellence" luncheon.
Where: River Oaks Country Club.
The scoop: Nine-time Grammy Award-winning songwriter and producer Bryan-Michael Cox wowed the gathering of 340 with stories of working with stars such as Usher, Toni Braxton, and Mariah Carey and with memories of his days as an HSPVA student. Cox was honored as the 2016 Distinguished Alumnus at the event that raised a record $211,000. The luncheon was chaired by Kris and Neil Thomas and Austin Thomas.
Perhaps the highlight of the day was the spirited live auction that included a private recording session in Atlanta with Cox, a scholarship for HSPVA students to go to Atlanta for an exclusive studio tour and a recording session with Cox, and two 2017 Grammy tickets.
Who: Mayor Sylvester Turner, City Controller Chris Brown, State Sen. Sylvia Garcia, State Rep. Sarah Davis, City Council members Ellen Cohen and David Robinson, Caroline and Perryn Leech, Barry Mandel, and HSPVA principal Scott Allen.
