Crazy in love, these couples know how to make their own magic moments beyondValentine's Day
Ah, the lucky couples who seem to be in love 24/7 — those who appear blissfully attached at the hip, touchy-feely all the time, making the most of every moment together. OK, so that's a little too syrupy even for this confirmed romantic, but we do know more than a few couples who seem to have the formula for enduring love.
Beyond the obvious — mutual respect, sense of humor, level heads, great sex, etc. — we asked a handful of adoring duos to share their little rituals for keeping the love lights burning.
Dr. Kelli Cohen-Fein and Martin Fein
You cannot be around these two without feeling the love vibe, theirs is such a potent, loving partnership. So it comes as no surprise when Kelli says that they've been married for 12 years "and are looking forward to forever."
They speak French to one another (Kelli has lived in Paris) and call each other "cheri" and "cherie." Darling, to you and me.
"We ballroom dance, cha cha and salsa in our home, just the two of us after we kiss our children goodnight," she emailed. "We enjoy a book club a deux . . . just the two of us. We sing romantic Bocelli and Alan Bergman songs to each other while eating ice cream in the wee hours of the morning."
Making an international record of their love, the Feins have a collection of photos of them kissing in destinations around the world, from the Great Wall of China to the Antarctic, from every continent except Australia.
She concludes on this great love, "We always promise to find each other again in every lifetime!"
Carol and Mike Linn
It's continuous romance for this retired energy exec and his bride of four and a half years. They are religious about keeping Sundays for themselves except for that rare instance such as in April when they are chairing the Bayou Bend Garden Party or an upcoming Sunday when Mike celebrates his 60th birthday at Tony's.
"Please don't throw up, we are crazy in love!"
Both have been married before and both relish the close relationship they have today.
"We snuggle lots while reading next to each other on the couch," Carol emailed. "AND he asks me to marry him every single day and says he wants to be with me the rest of life. He tells me that every day at various times."
While Mike has made a ritual of the proposal, Carol says that she tries to do one special thing for him each day as an expression of her love. "It can be small like a note in his briefcase, a card or setting the table for dinner in an unexpected room with candles or running a hot bath for him with bubbles.
"Please don't throw up, we are crazy in love!"
Allie and Jay Fields
Married 5 1/2 years, this thirtysomething couple might appear to be party people but they admit to being quite the homebodies.
Some of their favorite moments together are at home with just the two of them.
"Jay and I love to drink red wine all night long at our house while playing ping pong," she emailed.
"We also love to sit in Jay's office, which I nicknamed 'headquarters,' and have wine, homemade antipasto platters of meats and cheeses and watch a marathon of The Bachelor and American Idol.
Karen and Mike Mayell
They might have been married for 24 years, but it just keeps getting better according to this couple, who have three nearly-grown daughters. There is a palpable magic between Karen and Mike that extends from the mornings when he cooks their breakfast to late at night when he plays attentive chaperon to the spirited A&M grad. He practically has stars in his eyes when speaking of her.
They keep their romance in high gear with a simple but loving morning ritual. "We wake up every morning, Monday through Friday, at 7 to NPR and lay in bed for 20 minutes with major cuddling."
Weekends are a different indulgence. "On weekends, we are known to stay in bed all day Saturday and all day Sunday. That's all I'm going to say!!!!"
Laura and Dr. Mike Sweeney
She is a high-powered real estate agent with John Daugherty Realtors. He is a busy thoracic surgeon. Between them, they have eight children, with 11-year-old Juliet still living at home and little down time.
After 13 years of marriage, they consider themselves lucky that they share a passion for live concerts and that both are music junkies in general.
"We stay up late downloading iTunes and talking about old music," Laura emailed. "Or better yet, we go to a lot of rock or country concerts. We are both night owls and love to stay up late because it is our time to see each other!"
