Shelby 's Social Diary
Lewinsky, Bobbitt, Snooki & Pee-wee Herman had nothing on these partygoers
The costuming was so outrageous at Friday night's Blackball that at least one partygoer, portraying Lorena Bobbit, had morning-after regrets and begged that we not post the photo of her carrying a bloodied knife and a giant-sized penis.
Her new employer, it seems, was uneasy about the, dare we say vulgar, image that could end up all over the Internet and tarnish the non-profit's image. Indeed.
Tarnished images was what the Blackball, benefiting Glasstire and Fresh Arts Coalition, was all about with most of the 400 guests dressed as social outcasts. Happily for CultureMap, none of the other characters, ranging from Snooki and the Situation to a dead ringer for Pee-wee Herman to several Monica Lewinskys in stained blue dresses, had second thoughts.
Founders of the annual costume bash Rainey Knudson and Marita Fairbanks, always attired in outrageous tandem, channeled ice skaters Nancy Kerrigan and Tonya Harding, respectively, the latter carrying a pipe handy for injuring her competitor.
Masterminds behind the madness were chairs Allison and David Ayers, Shannon Hall and Marcus Sloan and Cabrina and Steven Owsley. We're not certain if it really was an honor to be honored amid the mayhem but honorees Meg and Nelson Murray were steadfast in their support of the evening.
Beyond ogling characters such as a shoplifting Winona Ryder and a fetching Cruella Deville, there was dancing (including a conga line), noshing and bidding in a silent auction filled with artful offerings.
Among those whom we recognized (some of the costumes completely obscured true identities) were criminal defense attorney Matt Hennessy, Susie and Sanford Criner, Dr. Roland Maldonado and Joel Bickley, Leigh and Reggie Smith, Michael Galbreth, Eric Pulaski, Don Mafrige Jr., Marcia Mercadante, Bill Arning and Annie Criner with Campbell Eifler.
