    Growing Houston crêpe cafe brings Parisian style to new Cypress store

    French-inspired Houston restaurant Sweet Paris Crêperie & Café has arrived in Cypress' upscale Bridgeland development, bringing with it the usual selection of sweet and savory crêpes, drinks, and more.

    The store opened this week at 20240 Summit Point Crossing. The cafe serves both traditional crêpe combinations like ham and cheese and nutella and fruit, as well as riffs like chicken enchilada and the Le Californian (turkey, pepper jack, avocado, bacon, etc). Waffles, salads, and milkshakes round out the menu.

    "This new location is more than just a business, it's a way to be part of something bigger," said Mike Kelton a local entrepreneur and franchise owner. "Bringing Sweet Paris to Bridgeland gives me the opportunity to be involved in a community I care about, support local youth programs and nonprofits, and create a place where families and friends can come together and enjoy an incredible meal."

    Kelton is a well-known figure in Houston. After spending 32 years in the wine and spirits industry, he turned restaurateur in 2018. He and his wife, Mary, have been a part of several eateries, including Tree House Cafe and Hunger Crush. Kelton is one of the original Sweet Paris Strategic Partners, and also operates the Sweet Paris locations in Austin and The Woodlands.

    First opening in 2012 with the Rice Village location, Sweet Paris has grown into an international chain with stores across the United States and Mexico. Houston leads the way with eight, including the new Bridgeland location. A trip to France inspired founders Ivan and Allison Chavez to create the concept. Since then, the chain has grown steadily thanks to its crowd-pleasing menu and strategic expansion. savvy navigation of Houston's rapidly changing food communities. They opened their Highland Village outpost in 2018, and another in Sugar Land Town Square in 2020.

    "The Houston area has always held a special place for us — it's where Sweet Paris was born, and we've seen incredible growth here," added co-founder Allison Chavez. "We're beyond excited to open our eighth location here and continue sharing our passion with even more Houstonians. This expansion is a natural step in building on the strong foundation we've laid in the region, and we have no doubt that Mike will continue to represent the brand with the same unwavering dedication and passion displayed at his two other locations."

    A fisherman who’s a favorite of Houston chefs is getting into the restaurant business. Frederick McBride, better known as “Captain Fred,” will open Captain Mc’s Seafood near the Third Ward in May.

    Located near the University of Houston and Texas Southern University at 5055 Griggs Road, Captain Mc’s will serve wild caught popcorn shrimp, black drum, and blue crab caught by McBride and his team of commercial fisherman. The menu has been streamlined to include plates of fried drum and fried shrimp, a fried shrimp po’ boy, and a crab cake sandwich, along with hamburgers and chicken tenders for non-seafood eaters.

    “Our diners will have the real possibility of eating a fish or blue crab that was caught early that morning and fried up just in time for dinner,” McBride said in a statement.

    The restaurant’s proximity to the coast allows Captain Mc’s to sell fresh caught, wild seafood at a price that’s similar to national fast food restaurants. For example, a four-ounce crab cake sandwich with fries, a hushpuppy, and a drink is priced at $20, and a combo meal of drum and shrimp with fries, a hushpuppy, and a drink is $25.

    Since 2020, McBride and his crew have been supplying seafood to restaurants such as Navy Blue, Josephine’s, and Pier 6. As he prepared to open the restaurant, McBride asked his chef friends to contribute recipes. Matt Staph, a private chef who has worked at Brennan’s and One Fifth, helped with the fried recipes, and Lucille’s chef-owner Chris Williams worked on the crab cake. Pier 6 chef Joe Cervantez contributed a sauce that’s served with every meal, and James Beard Award winner Chris Shepherd contributed a remoulade recipe. Josephine’s chef Lucas McKinney, a CultureMap Tastemaker Awards winner, helped with overall menu development.

    “Chefs Luke, Matt, Chris Williams, Joe, and Chris Shepherd have all been fishing with me on multiple occasions and have experienced the sea to table experience that we are bringing to Houston,” McBride said.

    Initially, the restaurant will be open Thursday-Sunday from 11 am-11 pm. It will offer diners the choice of a 35-seat dining room or getting a to-go order from its drive-through window.
