there's the rub
Memorial favorite now slinging pizzas and shaking cocktails in the East End
One of Memorial’s favorite restaurants has arrived in the East End. Jonathan’s the Rub has opened its third location.
Located in the former’s Gatsby’s Grill/Acadian Coast space at 2929 Navigation Blvd., the new Jonathan’s brings the restaurant’s familiar formula to a new part of Houston. Its proximity to downtown makes it a pre-game option for fans attending concerts, sporting events, and other happening.
First established as a catering company in 2000, Jonathan’s the Rub has grown to two full service restaurants at the Memorial Green development and in the Campbell Place office building on the Katy Fwy. It has developed a devoted following in the Memorial area for Levine’s signature “new Houston” cuisine that includes everything from lobster tacos and blackened shrimp and grits to Italian American classics and steakhouse fare.
Unique to this location are what the restaurant is describing as “Brooklyn-style” pizza that’s prepared in an open kitchen.
“I grew up with authentic Brooklyn-style pizza, and we can’t wait to introduce it into the menu at this new location,” chef-owner Jonathan Levine said in a statement. “We have been working on it over the last few months to perfect it for the opening.”
Jonathan’s is also a family affair. His son Sam oversees Campbell Place while daughter Jessica is at Memorial Green. Levine’s grandson Jay, who recently graduated from the Culinary Institute of America, has also joined the business.
Currently, the restaurant is open for happy hour beginning at 3 pm Monday through Saturday and dinner daily beginning at 4 pm.
“We are excited for the opportunity to bring our East Coast meets Gulf Coast food and drinks, warm atmosphere, and comfortable dining experience to a new neighborhood – and closer to the major sports and entertainment complexes downtown,” Levine added.
