Houston food experts dish on hottest new restaurants, best bars, and most exciting 2023 openings

Looking back on the year in dining.
Instead of the usual three segment format, CultureMap food editor Eric Sandler mixes things up on this week's episode of "What's Eric Eating." Sandler is joined by four of his regular co-hosts — Mary Clarkson, Michael Fulmer, Matt Harris, and Linda Salinas — to take a look back at the year in dining.
The conversation begins with the panelists discussing some of their favorite new restaurants of the year. They mention a range of places, including Navy Blue, Hamsa, Burger Bodega, and Tatemó. Each person also shouts out favorite dishes from other establishments, mentioning everything from the meatballs at Marmo to Theodore Rex's classic tomato toast.
Salinas and Clarkson mention some of their favorite new bars, including Clarkwood, Refuge, and EZ's Liquor Lounge. From there, the panel turns to the established restaurants they dined at this year. Sandler mentions making his first ever visit to Chez Nous, the French fine dining staple in Humble, among others.
The episode concludes with a sneak peek at some of the openings everyone is looking forward to in 2023. Most mention Andiron, the new live fire steakhouse from the owners of The Pit Room. Others cite Clark's, the oyster bar from Austin, and Late August, chef Dawn Burrell's Afro-Asian concept that's coming to The Ion.
