Cool Montrose dance club and music spot turns the tables with new Greek-Mexican restaurant
A Montrose dance club has upgraded its offerings by adding dinner and brunch. Echoes, a bar and restaurant located next to the Shell station at the corner of Richmond and Montrose, will begin serving food as Echoes Cafe on May 4.
Owner Georgeos Kazilas cites his grandmothers, one of Mexican heritage and the other of Greek heritage, as the inspiration for Echoes Cafe's eclectic menu. Diners will find spanakopita and souvlaki alongside ribeye tacos at dinner. Brunch bounces between the previously mentioned Greek dishes and Mexican classics like molletes and chilaquiles.
“My Greek and Mexican grandmothers, both excellent cooks, raised me on delicious dishes from their respective cuisines,” Kazilas said in a statement. “I've always wanted to honor their cooking and add something new to Houston's eclectic food scene.”
The cafe will be open for dinner from 5 pm to midnight Tuesday through Saturday and for Sunday brunch from 10 am to 3 pm. Tuesday night is steak night, when Echoes will serve a 10-ounce ribeye with creamed spinach and fries for $35. Eventually, the establishment plans to introduce a seafood-oriented lunch menu with salmon, octopus, shrimp pasta, and more.
Kazilas recruited husband-and-wife chefs Armando Ramirez and Ana Stanciu to oversee the kitchen. Ramirez is a Houston hospitality veteran who’s worked at restaurants such as Hugo’s, Backstreet Cafe, BCN, and Vic & Anthony’s. Stanciu trained at the Le Cordon Bleu culinary school.
“Good authentic Greek food is hard to find and is something I know and love. I miss it when I am not in Greece, so I want to share it with my hometown,” Kazilas added. “I also want to honor my Mexican heritage and contribute to Houston's excellent Mexican cuisine.”
