A Hall of Fame restaurant in Houston: Local institution nets a huge nationalhonor
How exclusive is the Fine Dining Hall of Fame?
Let's put it this way: In 2011, more than 20 chefs and restaurants were awarded a prestigious James Beard medal, widely considered the Oscars of the culinary world. Only five restaurants, plus one chef, were honored by Nation's Restaurant News with admission to the Hall of Fame.
This year a local legend is among the inductees. Brennan's of Houston joins Tony's, Américas, Mark's American Cuisine and the late Cafe Annie as the only Houston restaurants to receive the honor.
"It doesn’t get any better than when your mom’s proud of you!"
This also puts Brennan's of Houston on par with Commander's Palace, the Brennan family concept in New Orleans, which was selected for the Fine Dining Hall of Fame in 1982.
"We’re so honored to be recognized," owner Alex Brennan-Martin told CultureMap via email. "My mother, Ella Brennan, left me a voicemail the other day after she had seen the article in NRN and her voice cracked a bit (several times) while saying how proud and pleased she was of us and to please share her thanks and congratulations with everyone at the restaurant.

Brennan's joins San Francisco's Coi, Rioja of Denver, Lucques in Los Angeles and Wylie Dufresne's cutting-edge wd~50 in New York as the 2011 lifetime members.
Thomas Keller — the only American-born chef ever to receive three Michelin stars at two separate restaurants for The French Laundry in Napa and Per Se in New York — has been named this year's Fine Dining Legend.
