Tony Mandola's heads to Waugh; Clark and Cooper to open new spot
Most local fans of Gulf Coast seafood can probably drive to Tony Mandola's Gulf Coast Seafood blindfolded. After over 20 years in its current spot in the River Oaks Shopping Center, Mandola has announced he's pulling up roots and building his own freestanding space when his current lease expires in September 2010.
The new spot, on the corner of Waugh Drive and West Dallas catty-corner from the future Whole Foods Market, will be "very French Quarter, with lots of brick, wrought iron, and courtyards," says Mandola. The plans are for a space that's almost 50 percent bigger than the current location, with a greatly expanded kitchen and banquet room. "For me, I'd just much rather own than rent," says Mandola of the decision to leave his long-time location. "This is a place I'll have when I retire, something I can leave to my children...It's the culmination of a dream."
One possible new tenant in the vacated space is a new concept from Charles Clark and Grant Cooper, of Ibiza and Catalan renown, aiming for an opening date around Valentine's Day of 2011. The new place will be something of an American brasserie, with their winning formula of a high-profile chef, a focus on wine and a sexy setting of beautiful woods and glass, with leather banquettes.
