LA froyo fave Pinkberry is heading to Houston: Let the frozen yogurt wars begin!
East Coast-West Coast rivalries didn't die with Biggie and Tupac, they've just moved to the food world. (And to tween viral video stars, in my fantasy world.)
First there was Battle Cupcake, with Angelenos backing Sprinkles Cupcakes and New Yorkers obsessed with Magnolia Bakery (you know, at least until it became inextricably linked with Sex And The City, crowded with tourists and thus undesirable).
But in the fight for low-cal frozen yogurt supremacy, Houston is the newest battlefield for the coasts to duke it out. California fave Pinkberry has announced that it plans to open a slew of locations in the greater Houston area, starting with a location in Webster at the Baybrook Passage shopping center.
Pinkberry will have to take on NYC's Tasti D-Lite as well as homegrown chains like Berripop and Swirll for the title of favorite guilt-free frozen indulgence. Unlike Tasti D-Lite, Pinkberry can claim to be a real frozen yogurt (not just "frozen dairy product"), with real yogurt cultures that have the National Yogurt Association seal of approval.
While Tasti D-Lite has more than a 100 flavors rotating in daily, the Pinkberry menu is short and sweet, with the tangy original flavor supplemented by five seasonal choices — for fall, it's pomegranate, coconut, chocolate, mango and peanut butter.
What's your favorite frozen yogurt stop? Will you try Pinkberry or would you rather throw caution into the wind and hit Hank's Ice Cream?
