    Dolce Neve Coming to H-Town

Austin's best gelato shop targets trendy Heights shopping center for Houston outpost

    Eric Sandler
    Aug 2, 2016 | 9:15 am

Sometimes a pop-up is just a one-off opportunity for a fun collaboration between like-minded chefs who don’t typically get to work together, but other times a pop-up serves as a preview for a new restaurant that’s coming to Houston.

With that in mind, expect to see a repeat performance of Sunday’s pop-up by Dolce Neve at Fluff Bake Bar. The Austin-based gelato shop has signed a lease to open a Houston location in the same Heights shopping center that’s home to Thai restaurant Foreign Correspondents, cocktail bar Canard, and coffee and doughnut shop Morningstar, co-owner Marco Silvestrini tells CultureMap.

Set to open in early 2017, Dolce Neve’s Houston outpost will replicate the design and feel of an Italian home. More importantly, the Houston outpost will also feature Dolce Neve’s rotating selection of seasonal gelatos made with traditional Italian techniques that utilizes local ingredients whenever possible.

On Sunday, they included traditional flavors like pistachio and hazelnut as well as a more savory variation made with goat cheese and wild blueberry. That variety led CultureMap Austin to name Dolce Neve one of the city’s nine best ice cream shops in 2015.

“Our good friend David Buehrer, owner of Morningstar, Blacksmith and Greenway, is one of our regular customers and was always asking when we would open a shop in Houston,” Silvestrini writes in an email. “The opportunity presented itself in the same shopping center as Morningstar so we couldn’t pass this opportunity to have David as a neighbor and be part of the Houston community.”

Buehrer confirms that he’s a passionate Dolce Neve fan. In particular, he tells CultureMap he appreciates the shop’s commitment to sourcing high-quality ingredients and using careful preparations that matches the obsession he brings to the coffee he serves.

“I travel for coffee competitions. I’ve been to a lot of other cities. I eat ice cream or gelato everywhere I go,” Buehrer says. “To find something like Dolce Neve so close (to Houston), I thought this is the best gelato I’ve ever had. . . We literally would find reasons to go to Austin just to get gelato.”

The shop serves a wide array of treats including biscotti sandwiches and popsicles.

Staple Houston Tex-Mex spot spices up massive Spring development

Los Cucos is coming to City Place.

A Houston Tex-Mex staple is coming to a mixed-use development in Spring. The next location of Los Cucos Mexican Cafe will open later this year in City Place.

Located at 1401 Lake Plaza Dr., the restaurant will occupy approximately 7,700 square feet near City Place Plaza. Modeled after a store that opened in Montgomery last year, the new Los Cucos will feature upgraded interiors and a wraparound patio.

Founded in Katy by the Cabrera family 30 years, Los Cucos has built a devoted following for its well-executed Tex-Mex fare and warm service. Signature items include beef, chicken, and shrimp fajitas, enchiladas verdes, and a creamy green salsa. The restaurant’s success has allowed the family to expand with other concepts such as Vida Mariscos and Lago Mariscos — both seafood restaurants with a sports bar component — and Brazilian steakhouse Gauchos Do Sul.

Margaritas — rocks, frozen, or fruit-forward — lead the cocktail program, alongside other, agave-based sips and a range of beers. They’re featured during happy hour that should appeal to employees of nearby businesses such as Exxon Mobil and HP.

“Our vision for this location goes beyond being just another dining option — it’s about bringing energy and atmosphere to the heart of City Place, especially in the evenings and on weekends,” owner Sergio Cabrera Jr said in a statement. “We were drawn to City Place not only by its thoughtfully designed setting, but also the built-in customer base. It’s a wonderful opportunity to serve a wide-ranging and growing audience of professionals, residents, and visitors every day of the week.”

Los Cucos will join a number of restaurants at City Place, including Common Bond, Island Grill, and Sushi Rebel. Located near I-45 and the Grand Parkway, the 60-acre development also includes a 10-screen Star Cinema Grill, three Marriott hotels, and a 150-acre nature preserve.
