Best Lobster Roll
On a roll: Lobster lovers in Houston have another reason to get happy
Spending summers with relatives who live in the Northeast, I grew up eating lobster in different forms — from luscious lobster bisque to mouth-watering lobster po' boys to just picking the juicy pieces directly from the crustacean. But when summer was over and I was back in Houston, it was hard to eat lobster because I knew it wouldn't compare.
When I recently put aside these worries and set out on a search for the best lobster roll in Houston, Maine-ly Sandwiches came up and the drive to the restaurant in Greenspoint was well worth it. Their speciality, a foot-long toasted bun stuffed with creamy lobster, is simply exquisite.
Now if only there was a closer location — oh wait, there soon will be. Owner Melvin "Buddy" Charity plans to take over the spot previously occupied by Sugarbaby's Cupcake Boutique on 3310 S. Shepherd. The cupcake shop closed in May after six years in business.
Charity, a native of Maine, opened the little sandwich shop at 10745 North Freeway about a year ago, featuring lobster imported from his home state. At first the $18 lobster roll ($9 for a half roll) was a Friday special, but it become so popular that it was soon added to the daily menu.
A couple of months ago, a post on the restaurant's Facebook page mentioned a second location and encouraged fans to chime in on where it should be. Montrose was the winner.
The new restaurant plans to open next month.
