A buzzed-over Houston restaurant suddenly closes: Investor pulls the plug on top chef
Roots Bistro has had a rough go of it the past few months, with the closure of its Roots Juice component and that offensive domestic violence "joke" posted on its marquee, and now a restaurant source tells CultureMap that the locally-focused restaurant has served its last meal.
Thursday's dinner service was the finale for executive chef Chandler Rothbard and his Roots team, who had just participated in CultureMap's Last Chef Standing event on Tuesday at the Royal Sonesta Houston Hotel.
The source hints that a "disengaged investor" pulled the rug out from under the enterprise, which was previously under the helm of chef German Mosquera (who is now making waves at La Colombe d'Or Hotel), and has plans to go a different direction.
Word is that outlook is positive for Rothbard and general manager Kenneth Choate, who have already been approached with new opportunities.
