Morton's & Little Woodrow's jump in
Restaurant memberships catching on: From personal wine lockers to the 50 beersclub
Who says you have to join a country club?
Several watering holes and restaurants around town offer their own membership programs — clubs that offer more immediate gratification. It might not appeal to some people, but others enjoy the camaraderie that comes with socializing with people with similar liquid interests.
Are you the membership sort? If so, are you more high end or low brow? Being champions of diversity, we looked into the VIP program at Morton’s The Steakhouseand The Big 50 Club at Little Woodrow’s. You decide which is more tailored to your tastes.
If you join the VIP program at Morton's, you need not ask for extra onions; your waiter already knows your preferences. The restaurant keeps a profile on its members that includes everything from their dining likes and dislikes to their allergies. Although anyone can apply for this (free) membership, the wait list is long. Wine enthusiasts and regular patrons are the ideal candidates, although this criterion is not mandatory.
And with VIP status comes the ultimate in steakhouse status symbols: A personalized wine locker showcasing your name front and center. Your private stash is kept in a controlled-temperature atmosphere, and should you need help filling your locker, you can ask the concierge service for wine recommendations suitable to your sophisticated palette. Want a bottle that's not necessarily on Morton’s wine list? Just ask — the staff will do their best to track it down.
While there's no wait list or fee to join The Big 50 Club at Little Woodrow’s, acceptance is no slam dunk. The application process to this members-only club requires you to drink a pre-determined list of 50 beers.
Overachievers beware: The limit is two per day. Ideal candidates are hops connoisseurs and who prefer their meals served via delivery service straight to their wooden bar table.
Consume all of the brews on The Big 50 Club’s prerequisite list, and membership into the Big 50 Club is yours. Once you've proven your beer-drinking eminence, you're rewarded with a plaque on the wall bearing your name as well as happy hour prices 24/7 (or at least within working hours).
Alas, Little Woodrow’s does not offer concierge service, but as a newly minted beer guru, you will know exactly which cold brewski hits the spot. No assistance needed.
