The news that Rice Village staple Ruggles Café Bakery had closed came from an unlikely source Friday night. Ruggles Black chef Bruce Molzan, who ceded control of the restaurant to his ex-wife Susan after their divorce in 2005, tweeted about the closure.
I am sorry to see Susan has closed closed Ruggles cafe bakery ..was a great concept— Bruce Molzan (@ChefBruceMolzan) March 13, 2015
For more than 10 years, Ruggles Café Bakery has served as a reliable source of the desserts that Susan Molzan made famous as the pastry chef at Ruggles Grill during its '80's heyday. Once the grill closed in 2012, the cafe became the only place in Houston to sample Molzan's peerless white chocolate bread pudding and other sweets.
Molzan remains a partner in well-regarded Upper Kirby bakery Petite Sweets. Opened in 2011 in partnership with F.E.E.D. TX (Liberty Kitchen, BRC), Petite Sweets is known for its French macarons, cake balls and frozen custard.
CultureMap has contact Molzan's representative for more information about the circumstances of the closure and what the future holds for the space. We will update this story when she replies.
