Another Washington Avenue bro bar bites the dust — evicted for failing to pay rent for months
Well, it looks as if Pearl Bar's days are done . . . at least, according the lock-out notice posted at the entrance of the once-popular Washington Avenue drinking hole.
News of the pending eviction, which first came by way of an Eater tipster, is far from surprising after agents from the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Division (TABC) stopped by the bar in January to seize cash for roughly $40,000 in unpaid taxes.
Attorney Ron West — who represents the owner of the vintage 1910 building — says that Pearl hasn't paid rent since November.
Attorney Ron West — who represents Eva Hughes, the owner of the vintage 1910 building — tells CultureMap that Pearl has failed to pay rent since November and that eviction proceedings are in motion.
The apparent end of Pearl comes amidst a subtle change in the winds along Washington Avenue, as mega-bars like Sawyer Park shutter and smaller drink joints like Liberty Station continue to thrive.
The atmosphere along the notoriously rowdy strip will get another dose of casual drinking sophistication in the coming months with Alba Huerta's handcrafted cocktail bar Julep in the old Corkscrew space.
Meanwhile, Midtown is witnessing a bit of a resurgence along Main Street just below the I-45 with the opening of the food truck-friendly Capitol Bar and the forthcoming craft beer spot Worhals. Also arriving is Dogwood, a bar on Bagby from former Bachelor star and restaurateur Brad Womack.
This new Midtown fever has even taken hold of former Sawyer Park owners Darren and Jeff Van Delden, who just launched a resto-bar called The Good Life at Gray and Brazos.
