Hack the vote: Final Four Restaurant Challenge thwarts an attempt to game thesystem
When we said the contenders in The Big Dance Restaurant Challenge might do anything to win, we had no idea how right we were.
The system is designed so voters can cast a ballot once over a 24-hour period per computer. But over the last 24 hours during Round Three voting, the CultureMap server received more than 20,000 votes from a few IP addresses in the Dallas area, which CultureMap CEO Stephen Newman described as "virtually impossible" outside of an automated script designed to game the system.
Internal voting monitors spotted the irregular activity, voided the questionable ballots and blocked the offending IP addresses from further voting. Results will continue to be monitored and similar action will be taken if abuse reoccurs.
With revised vote totals, races pitting Arturo's Uptown Italiano against Del Frisco's and Quattro vs. Ninfa's on Navigation have tightened up; House of Blues has extended its lead over The Tasting Room; and Sullivan's Steakhouse has moved ahead of Max's Wine Dive.
There's no evidence that any of the competing restaurants are behind the impropriety but the incident does show how serious people are taking the Challenge.
The winner of The Big Dance Restaurant Challenge (which crowns a champion March 8) receives one of the four coveted spots serving food at the Big Dance Concert Series at Discovery Green over the extended Final Four weekend. Three other restaurants from this round of eight will be chosen by judges on March 9 to fill out the remaining three spots.
The Big Dance Concert Series will bring A-List musical acts to Discovery Green for free concerts. The four restaurants will be serving food for purchase at the event.
Round Three in the Restaurant Challenge ends Saturday at 2:59 p.m. Remember, you can vote ONCE per day till then to determine the Challenge's Final Four.
