- The VERY popular chef-led culinary tours sponsored by the GHCVB have added four more dates: Taste of Asia with Monica Pope and Bryan Caswell on June 6, Southern Comfort with Randy Evans and Mark Holley on June 27, Grocery Store and Ethnic Markets with Chris Shepherd and Randy Evans on July 25, and Chintatown with Chris Shepherd on October 10. Tickets are $180 each, and tours cap at 16 people.
- Fresh off closing their West Alabama location, Ziggy's Bar and Grill in Montrose is in a fight with the city over parking, or lack thereof. When the new ownership renewed the lease, they did not renew the lease on the adjacent parking lot, putting Ziggy's in violation of city ordinances. Read the unfolding drama here and here.
- Cafe Zol, the Scandinavian-American bistro on S. Shepherd, will be closing on Feb. 14., reports b4-u-eat.
- Also from b4-u-eat: It seems the new prime-rib-and-margaritas outpost by the Laurenzo family is rebranding yet again. Laurenzo's is dropping the 'Grille' from the name, lowering prices and has installed some new gold and earth-toned colors on the exterior.
- Another creek in the Heights: Canyon Creek is set to open on Westcott in April.
- It was a huge week in burgers for outer loopers—Smashburger opened in Vintage Park, JAX Burgers hit Spring, Five Guys Burgers & Fries debuted in Humble and Brooks Burgers opened in the Hot Dog Station spot in Missouri City.
- Coming soon to Dallas and San Antonio: Max's Wine Dive
- Houston Chowhounds 'Shroom throwdown at Vic & Anthony's was a smashing success. Which chefs had the winning fungus? Tied for third were Valentino's Cunninghame West (mushroom with rabbit marsala and creamy polenta) and Branch Water Tavern's David Grossman (black trumpet mushroom & butternut squash soup dumpling with goat cheese fondue and watercress), second place went to Mark Cox of Mark's American Cuisine (mushroom medley salad with a grilled portabella dome), and the winner was prodigiously skilled (and currently unemployed) pastry chef Rebecca Masson, who made an ice box pie with a porcini-chocolate crust, candy cap mushroom custard and toasted meringue.
