There are so many great places to live in Houston that it helps to have an expert on your side. The Neighborhood Guide presented by Martha Turner Sotheby's International Realty gives you insider access from the agents who live and work there, providing in-the-know info about your possible new community.
    ---

Native Houstonian and real estate professional Meredith Flores has many fond memories of her time in Washington Corridor, so she loves sharing this special neighborhood with her clients.

“First and foremost, it has such a distinct charm to it,” she says. “There is a rich history of architecture plus it’s close to restaurants and nightlife, and there’s direct access to Houston’s famed Buffalo Bayou Park. For walks, bike rides, or any outdoor activities, you couldn’t pick a better location in the city.”

Flores notes that Washington Corridor has the uncanny ability to keep up with a fast-paced and active lifestyle while still offering a cozy and relaxing neighborhood feel that’s walkable.

“My husband owned his home in the neighborhood and lived there for two years while we were dating,” she says. “I loved how easily I could get around the city from there,” Flores adds. “My white lab Baloo and my Havanese Maggie also loved our daily adventures around the neighborhood and dog park.”

Flores offered up a few of her personal favorites about life in Washington Corridor. Here's her guide:

    Where to eat & drink
"Henderson & Kane is the hidden gem of the neighborhood,” says Flores. “Disguised as a charming local market/grocery store, they serve the best brisket barbecue in addition to being a go-to place where you can grab locally sourced products and groceries.”

Even though she and her husband have moved out of the neighborhood, they still go out of their way for H&K’s smoked goodness. “The staff there are so friendly and become family after a while; they remember your favorite orders and always greet you with a smile,” she adds.

More of Flores’ favorite walkable spots in Washington Corridor include Julep for cocktails (it was the site of her and her husband’s first date!) and Catalina Coffee for a fresh-brewed caffeine fix.

“One of Houston’s steakhouse crown jewels is also just a quick walk away at B&B Butchers & Restaurant,” adds Flores. “Try the Carpet Bagger appetizer (Cajun-fried oysters on top of steak that sits atop thick-cut bacon, with blue cheese) — you won’t be disappointed.”

Just across the street from the steakhouse is B.B. Lemon, which she identifies as a great neighborhood restaurant and gathering spot for brunches and dinners with family and friends.

"Tacodeli is located on the same Washington Avenue strip, too, and has some of the best breakfast tacos in town."

    Where to play
“Day activities? Night activities? We've got it all,” says Flores. “The sand volleyball pit in Eleanor Tinsley Park is so fun for an afternoon with friends.”

Annually, she also loves the Fourth of July fireworks show right over Buffalo Bayou. It's the epitome of "small-town charm under the glow of the downtown skyline ... and the neighborhood barbecues and parties come out in full force."

    Where to live
Recent redevelopment and new restaurants have caused the Washington Corridor to flourish with sleek new townhouses, condominium developments, and single-family homes.

Looking for a contemporary-modern townhouse, a Queen Anne single-family, or a bungalow? You can find all these styles within the neighborhood, confirms Flores.

    More Marriott

Luxurious downtown Houston hotel expands with more rooms and rooftop pool

The JW Marriott Houston Downtown has revealed plans for a massive expansion that will add the adjacent Battelstein’s Building at 812 Main to the hotel's existing footprint.

With an eye to impress guests coming to Houston for the June 2026 FIFA World Cup, the revitalized Battelstein's Building will include a new ground floor restaurant, additional meeting and events spaces, and a rooftop bar and lounge with a pool overlooking the downtown skyline. It will offer easy access to the planned Main Street Promenade, also set to open next June.

“This initiative represents an exciting evolution for the JW Marriott Houston Downtown,” hotel general manager Jelle Vandenbroucke said in a statement. “We are not just adding rooms — we are redefining the guest experience by creating a hospitality destination that captures the energy, diversity and sophistication of Houston.”

When the expansion is complete, the Marriott will have a total of 384 guest rooms (an increase of 56), including 89 suites, touted in press materials as the largest inventory of luxury lodging in the city's core. The expansion also adds 10,000 square feet of meeting space to the Marriott, bringing the total to over 23,000 square feet. Rottet Studio designed the new space, and Los Angeles-based Cole Martinez Curtis & Associates is handling the renovation. Guests should still see plenty of the original materials used in these historic constructions as they explore the Marriott's modern services.

Built in 1924 to house the titular department store, and raised to 10 stories in 1950 by acclaimed architects Joseph Finger and George Rustay, the Battelstein’s Building is a beloved, if modest, part of the Houston skyline. Philip Battelstein opened his tailor and haberdashery in Houston in 1897 after arriving from Lithuania with almost no money. The store thrived through the post-war years, leading to its iconic expansion, but declined as the 1970s oil boom petered out and suburban shopping malls grew in popularity. The space was frequently vacant after 1980. Southwest Value Partners, the company that owns the hotel's current location, acquired the building in 2022.

Currently, the JW Marriott occupies another historic Houston location, the adjacent, 22-story Samuel F. Carter Building at 806 Main. When Samuel Fain Carter built it in 1910, it was the tallest building in Houston. Many doubted such a towering structure could actually stand on Houston's famously swampy ground, earning it the nickname Carter's Folly. More than a century later, it remains Houston's first skyscraper. The Marriott welcomed its first guests in 2014.
