Mayor's Green Thumb
New Houston mayor shows off green thumb and has a field day in Memorial Park
Still beaming over his inauguration fetes the previous week, Mayor Sylvester Turner joined volunteers in Memorial Park on Saturday to aid in the planting of 1,500 trees. Yes, he got down in the dirt for the think green photo opp.
The event kicked off tree-planting for the Eastern Glades portion of the Memorial Park Master Plan, which focuses on ecological and habitat restoration.
Trees for Houston and Kirksey Architecture donated the five-gallon trees that were planted across several acres.
Joining in the program were Memorial Park Conservancy, Houston Parks and Recreation Department, Trees For Houston and hundreds of volunteers. The latter came from Kirksey, Exxon Mobil, Camp Gladiator, Young Professionals in Energy, community groups, schools, corporations and neighbors.
