The IKEA Challenge
We need YOU: To do a piece of artwork for us — Calling all artists
- Attention all artists: We need you
- A Warhol is not in our budget. But we like the color yellow

We've got about a week left in our 30-day IKEA challenge to make a lounge out of what was once a glorified storage room, and we've just noticed one glaring omission. We don't have a big piece of artwork for the wall!
Sure, we picked up a few doo-dads, but our opposing white walls can't do bare the way the exposed brick can. We need something. Something big. And fast.
Which is where you come in. Aspiring (or established) artists, we're offering you a perfectly good wall to display the fruits of your creativity.
We don't have much of a budget — mainly just to cover cost of supplies and a small stipend. But we'll throw in a devoted daily audience with frequent opportunities for broader exposure (we have a lot of guests).
The parameters are these: We need a large horizontal piece (like, 5-ft. by 8-ft.) that incorporates bright yellow. It has to hang flush to the wall — which means no major protrusions into the space — but the rest is up to you.
Submit proposals to caroline@culturemap.com with a sketch of what it might look like and we'll ask readers to vote for their favorite in a CulturePoll.
Like Uncle Sam, we need you right now! We hope to get this done in time for the room's unveiling late next week.
Sure it's a big task, but several Houston artists created and painted designs on several Mini Coopers in a couple of days in time to be displayed at the White Linen Night festivities — and we know great artists love a challenge.
