Houston decorator takes bows in New York as one of Elle Decor's Top 10 talents
Applause, applause for interior decorator Randy Powers, who steps into the national spotlight tonight as one of 10 design talents selected from across the country for membership in Elle Decor's elite 2012 A-List. Ceremonies take place in the sparkling new Baccarat showroom on Third Avenue in New York and are hosted by Elle Decor editor-in-chief Michael Boodro and Baccarat Global CEO Markus Lampe.
(We would typically refer to our man Powers as an "interior designer." But it's a term that he loathes in favor of the "decorator" moniker.)
"I don't think you can be a really good designer and have a specific style," Powers said. "I think that to really be worth your salt, you have to be able to adopt to your clients' tastes."
The hard-working bon vivant, who practices under J. Randall Powers, is spotlighted with his fellow A-listers in the June issue of the design magazine now in its third year of sponsoring the competition that is decided by a jury of design peers.
"It came as a total surprise," Powers said on the eve of his departure for New York.
But it doesn't come as a surprise to those who know and admire his work. Powers' client llist reads like a Who's Who of Houston including Leslie and Mark Hull, Marsha and David Solomon, Gayle and Andy Singer, John and Becca Cason Thrash, Marita and J.B. Fairbanks and currently Janet Gurwitch and Ron Franklin.
In addition to Elle Decor, his projects have been published in Southern Accents, House Beautiful, Veranda and Papercity. And each is distinctive onto itself.
"I don't think you can be a really good designer and have a specific style," Powers said. "I think that to really be worth your salt, you have to be able to adopt to your clients' tastes. I love when I walk away from a project and it doesn't look like anyone else's home and people know that I did it."
