Settlement Goods & Design is a concept store, curated with one simple criterion: "Made in the U.S.A." on the label.
Conceived by friends and partners Jenny Morgan, Gene Morgan and Alicia Redman, the idea has been in the works for two years. Their goal is to introduce a new way for Houstonians to buy, with a focus on American-made, economy-sustaining, quality goods.
"We'll continue to add new, curious items that are made in the U.S.," Jenny Morgan said. "Things that people might not necessarily expect."
When the storefront opens at 3939 Montrose Blvd. Suite M in January, expect to see functional pocket tools displayed alongside Elizabeth Knight's nature-inspired jewelry and Laura Lombardi's geometric designs. Furniture by New York and Los Angeles-based designers will hold classic playing cards by Theory 11, soap and incense by Juniper Ridge and paper goods from Field Notes.
"The women's section will be the most edgy," co-owner and buyer Jenny Morgan tells CultureMap, with staples and statement pieces by Kain Label, Popomomo, Feral Childe, Rachel Rose, Samantha Pleet and more.
Gents will have fewer sartorial options ("There are already a lot of good men's stores in town, so we want to compliment rather than compete," said Jenny Morgan), but chief among them will be dress shirts from Gitman Bros. and denim from New York-based Left Field.
In addition, Settlement Goods will carry metal tree stumps from Houston-based George Sacaris, re-purposed and sustainable home goods, scents by CB I Hate Perfume and bags from MK Totem, J.W. Hulme and the Good Flock.
"We'll continue to add new, curious items that are made in the U.S.," Jenny Morgan said. "Things that people might not necessarily expect."
The second floor of the retail space will hold an in-house design studio, where Jenny and Gene Morgan will merge their design services with Redman's interior design expertise.
Construction is still underway and the official opening will just miss the holiday season, but Settlement Goods will put on an All-American Holiday Store pop-up shop this weekend at New Living. Stop by on Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. or Saturday and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m.
