Naeem Khan gets sporty with high-style workout wear, along with glamorous ball gowns
NEW YORK — Naeem Khan is known for his elaborately beaded evening gowns and embroidered cocktail dresses that have attracted enthusiastic clients ranging from first lady Michelle Obama to Houston's Becca Cason Thrash. But for spring 2015, Khan has branched into a different fashion area.
Would you believe glittery track suits?
"There's nothing like glamour and a blurry evening mixed together. Everything looks fabulous."
Khan opened his spring 2015 collection with several sporty looks, including black sequined track pants with a black-and-white sequined pullover and black georgette jogging pants banded at the ankles and paired with a floral beaded blouse. Other casual-yet-glam looks include cream-colored track pants with a pullover in a starburst pattern and a satin cheerleader skirt with a colorful beaded geometric pullover.
While they're over-the-top for the gym, the new styles are made for running around town or entertaining at home in an attention-getting way.
"To me that's my new thing. It's glamorous sportswear; it's comfortable," Khan said backstage, while enthusiastically greeting Houstonian Greggory Burk. "My clients are getting younger and younger and they don't want to be totally ball gowned out. All the young actresses are wearing these things. I needed to get into that."
Even with this new sportier bent, Khan continues to offer lots of glamorous evening wear, including illusion lace gowns in lilac, place blue or yellow, a satin gown with a thigh-high slit and silver beaded bustier, slinky halter gowns in red, green and blue, and glittery jumpsuits in all-green or all-white.
But, he hints, you ain't seen nothing yet. "This is a launch of something very big that's going to happen in February because it's my 10th anniversary," he said. "I'm going to do something amazing."
Khan also said he is looking forward to Fashion Houston, where he will show his spring collection at the Wortham Theater Center on Nov 19.
"That's going to be fun," said Kahn, who is known for his partying ways when visiting the Bayou City. "There are going to be some blurry evenings. I think it's going to be super glamorous. There's nothing like glamour and a blurry evening mixed together. Everything looks fabulous."
