Barneys Co-Op will close Galleria store in January
Bad news for fans of Alexander Wang, Shipley & Halmos and other emerging designers. Barneys Co-Op plans to shutter its Galleria store.
Executives told employees last week that the store, which specializes in denim and contemporary designs for a hip twentysomething audience, will close in late January. "They said it was a money issue," one employee told CultureMap.
The New York-based luxury retailer, owned by the Dubai investment firm Istithmar, has recently been in a precarious financial situation, with reports that it might declare bankruptcy or be sold. Barneys previously filed for bankruptcy in the mid-’90s after a period of over-expansion and closed stores in Houston and Dallas before reopening in both markets. Istithmar recently pumped more cash into the company and hired former Gucci head Mark Lee to return the retailer to profitability.
Women's Wear Daily reports that, in addition to the Galleria store, the chain will close a Co-Op in the Westchester Mall in White Plains, N.Y. in late February or March. But it is expanding on both coasts, with new stores in Los Angeles and Brooklyn. The Co-Op store in Austin and the Barneys New York store in Dallas will remain open.
Barneys officials in New York did not immediately return a phone and email request for comment.
