A stylish October
Fashion Houston adds Bibhu Mohapatra & Saks menswear show to lineup
Up-and-coming womenswear designer Bibhu Mohapatra and the best of fall menswear from Saks Fifth Avenue are the latest — and final — additions to the Fashion Houston roster. The fashion extravaganza will take place Oct. 10-13 at the Wortham Theater Center.
Mohapatra, a native of India with a masters degree in economics and fashion training at New York's famed Fashion Institute of Technology, where he won the Best Evening Wear Designer of the Year award, got his start at Halston and was design director for J. Mendel for a decade. The 39-year-old designer is credited for steering the J. Mendel label to a more youthful look while expanding its ready-to-wear collection. In 2009 he launched his own namesake line.
His collection is carried at Atrium and Neiman Marcus.
Mohapatra will show his spring/summer 2012 collection on Fashion Houston's final night (Oct. 13), which is shaping up to be an evening of glamour.
Ironically, Mohapatra is replacing J. Mendel in the Fashion Houston lineup.
Mohapatra will show his spring/summer 2012 collection on Fashion Houston's final night (Oct. 13), which is shaping up to be an evening of glamour. Mohapatra is known for creating fluid eveningwear. In addition, Cesar Galindo will unveil his Rojo collection of red evening gowns, (which will also be showcased at the Dec. 1 AIDS Foundation Houston luncheon), and designer Robert Rodriguez, also known for attention-getting red carpet fashions, will feature his spring/summer line.
To top off the evening, Becca Cason Thrash will be honored as Fashion Houston's Style Icon. The tribute will culminate in a runway show featuring 24 of her haute couture and designer gowns, many by Alexander McQueen.
Mohapatra told reporters at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week that his spring 2012 collection was inspired by the legendary fashion photographer Helmut Newton, so it's too bad the designer missed the Newton exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, which closed Sunday. Traces of the Newton influence can be seen in sheer and nude-tone fabrics, slits and cutouts, chain-link prints and crisscross bandage detailing that has a faint touch of the S&M fetish that the photographer featured in many of his photographs.
A selection of best in menswear from Saks Fifth Avenue will take Fashion Houston's sole remaining open spot on Oct. 11. The show will feature luxury labels as well as the Saks Fifth Avenue menswear line, a comprehensive collection of suits, shirts, ties and shoes, manufactured at many of the same factories used by European designers but priced less.
Other top designers at Fashion Houston include Carmen Marc Valvo, Douglas Hannant, Norman Ambrose, Barbara Tfank and Chloe Dao along with newcomers Jerri Moore, Aries Milan and Patrick Schwarzenegger, whose Project 360 collection is garnering attention.
