Made in the USA: Houston store and designers lead the charge for All-American fashion
It's easy to find clothing made in China, but try finding something made in America? Fat chance. But that is changing, thanks to stores like Settlement Goods & Design which offer products made only in the good ol' USA.
For this week's KHOU CultureMap Moment, CultureMap editor-in-chief caught up with co-owner Jenny Schlief Morgan, who explained why the Montrose store is so committed to American design. Settlement offers everything from leather jackets modeled after the one James Dean once wore to clothing from the Pendleton Heritage Collection, along with handmade jewelry, home goods and perfumes, for a unique kind of retail therapy.
The store is so dedicated to encouraging American designers that it hosted a discussion on locally manufactured fashion Thursday night featuring New York jewelry designer Venessa Arizaga, Los Angeles artist and furniture designer Bari Ziperstein and Houston fashion designer Chloe Dao, who manufactures her clothing in the Bayou City.
In the CultureMap Moment, Pugh singles out Dao and fashion designer David Peck, who also designs and manufactures his clothing in Houston, along with Hamilton Shirts, the Richmond Avenue shirt company that has been in business for more than 130 years.
