    Project Runway Winner

Spoiler alert! Project Runway Season 13 is hard to predict, but the winner is.....

    Clifford Pugh
    Sep 17, 2014 | 10:00 am

NEW YORK — "Welcome to Project Runway finale, season 13," Heidi Klum told a large, excited crowd at Lincoln Center. "Who would have thought so many season ago we would still be on the air?"

Like a well-oiled sewing machine, the reality show that revolves around devious designers and juicy backstage drama, just keeps chugging along. This season hasn't been one of its strongest, with aspiring designers who are not especially talented and seem unusually whiny, even by reality TV standards.

"I don't know how they make it happen by they make it happen. And that's what we're about to see."

But once fashion week rolls around, the drama intensifies and all the things that make the show so addictive fall into place.

That was the case when nine of the remaining contestants showed their collections to an appreciative audience during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week that included Olympic great Lindsey Vonn and Project Runway guest judge, actress Emmy Rossum.

"They really worked their booties off," Klum said about the contestants. "Most of big designers have months and months and months to spend in making a collection for New York fashion week. Ours only had four weeks and $9,000, which probably seems hard to do. I don't know how they make it happen by they make it happen. And that's what we're about to see."

    Too many contestants

As we have noted before in previous seasons, because fashion rolls around long before the competition has been whittled down to the final three (or four) contestants, Lifetime films all of the contestants who remain while the show is being aired. In this case, the audience had to sit through 90 looks from a whopping nine contestants, including the collection of Fäde Zu Grau, who was eliminated last week after the runway show took place.

So who will be among the final three (or four) on the season finale, scheduled to air October 23?

From observing previous PR fashion week tapings, designers often offer clues as to what the outcome will be, since they already know if they have made it to the end or not. They sometimes look dejected or are overly emotional when talking to the audience, which usually means they didn't make it.

This time around, though, most of the remaining designers except for blubbery Korina Emmerich kept their feelings in check — and she is always on emotional overload — so it is hard to detect whether she is a finalist or not. Her cohesive collection of colorblocked sportswear is surprisingly good, so she could very well be a finalist even though her PR season has been rocky.

    The favorites

The favorite still appears to be Sean Kelly, a young designer who recently arrived in the United States from New Zealand. His collection was on the fringe, with several pieces featuring the tasseled fabric, including a stunning orange fringed dress similar to the blue fringed dress he designed for Heidi Klum to wear to the Creative Emmy Awards presentation in an earlier episode. Half of Kelly's collection is dripping with fringe, which may be too much for the judges.

Hawaiian designer Kini Zamora, a co-favorite all season with his striking designs and lightning-fast construction techniques, showed a disappointing black-and-white collection that lacked the pizzazz of his previous efforts, so I'm guessing he didn't make the final cut.

Polarizing Alabama designer Sandhya Garg's collection seemed a little gimmicky — does she really need to spell out "Fearless" on the front of her opening dress? — but, it has several eye-catching pieces, including a black sequined mini with feathery shoulder pads and, the closer, a metallic tree-like coat over a white dress. And she does have a strong point of view.

The biggest surprise was Amanda Valentine, who veered from her hippy dippy roots with a modern collection that include a spiffy crocheted tunic over leather pants, flowing colorblocked gowns and nifty two-toned vests.

I'm guessing the final three are Sean, Amanda and Korina (with Sandya or Kini if they add a fourth) and the winner, in a big surprise, is........Amanda.

    But we'll find out.

Project Runway airs on Lifetime at 8 p.m. Thursdays. Repeat episodes are often shown before and afterwards on that night.

Houston dermatologist's guide to doing laundry for healthier summer skin

Houston's heat and humidity can increase sweat buildup on clothing, towels, bedding, and accessories. A dermatologist shares how often to wash common summer essentials to help prevent skin irritation, breakouts, and other seasonal skin concerns.

Houstonians are familiar with Texas's unofficial fifth season – sweaty season. Rising temperatures, humidity, sunscreen, and the occasional visit to the pool or the beach create the perfect storm for skin irritation. A few extra loads of laundry might not be anyone's idea of summer fun, but healthier skin could make it worth the effort.

Most people know to toss sweaty workout clothes straight into the laundry hamper, but many everyday items don't get the attention they deserve. According to Dr. Radhika Shah of Westlake Dermatology, skipping laundry day could quickly show up on a person's skin.

"Sweat can mix with bacteria and other debris from the skin when it accumulates on clothing, which can lead to odors, skin irritation, and sometimes, infection," Shah tells CultureMap.

The combination of sweat, heat, and moisture can create an environment where several common skin conditions thrive. Shah says she frequently sees issues including acne, folliculitis, irritant contact dermatitis, and yeast-related rashes such as intertrigo and tinea versicolor.

Not all fabrics handle summer heat equally

"People should look for cotton and linen (natural fabrics) over polyester and nylon (synthetic fabrics), as natural fabrics breathe better and tend to release sweat and odors more easily," Shah says.

Many might think that warm weather causes clothing fibers to trap moisture and bacteria more quickly, but Shah explains that how a fabric reacts is heavily dependent on the fabric itself. That means material can make a noticeable difference during Houston's long stretch of heat and humidity.

    Laundry routines are important

Summer laundry habits can affect skin health just as much as skincare products. Shah recommends avoiding heavily fragranced detergents whenever possible and skipping fabric softeners altogether.

"Detergents with fragrance can irritate the skin further, especially in those with sensitive skin or eczema," she says. "In addition, I would try to avoid fabric softeners, which can coat fabrics and trap sweat and other skin debris."

While everyone knows to wash underwear and gym clothes on repeat, Shah says there are two commonly overlooked items that deserve more attention.

"Change your pillowcase and your hat," she says. Her recommendation is to wash pillowcases every two to four days and hats after every three to four wears.

The summer washing guide for healthy skin

Not sure how often to wash your favorite warm-weather essentials? Shah offers these guidelines for summer's hottest months.

    • Swimwear: After every wear. Chlorine, saltwater, sweat, and sunscreen residue can all linger in fabric and irritate skin.
    • Workout clothes: After every wear. This is non-negotiable during hot summers.
    • Bras: Every two to three wears.
    • Sleepwear: Every two to three wears.
    • Shorts and pants: Every two to three wears.
    • Dresses: Every two to three wears.
    • Jeans: Every three to four wears.
    • Bath towels: After three to four uses.
    • Beach towels: After every use.
    • Sheets: Weekly.
    • Pillowcases: Every two to four days.

    Don't forget your beauty tools

Regular maintenance of beauty tools is also important for healthy skin, especially during the summer when sweat and sunscreen use increase. Makeup brushes, especially those used for foundation, concealer, and cream products, can accumulate oil, bacteria, dead skin cells, and product buildup. Dermatologists recommend washing foundation and concealer brushes weekly, while powder brushes can typically be cleaned every 1 to 2 weeks.
