- I'll wear Will Baldwin-designed pink pants with pride at the kickoff mediafashion show for the Bad Pants Golf Open
- 1560 The Game sports talk show host David Nuño will wear a pair of colorful bellbottoms designed by Francisco J. Castillo
The votes are in and CultureMap readers have made their choice — by the barest of margins.
In the first-ever CulturePoll, we asked you to pick the best pair of bad pants for me to wear to a media fashion show kick-off party for the 13th Annual Bad Pants Open Golf Tournament benefitting Texas Children's Hospital Newborn Center.
Nearly 600 readers chose among four designs by students in Silvio Ortega's menswear class at Houston Community College's fashion design program.
Throughout the voting, two designs seesawed back and forth as the leader. But when voting ended at midnight today, Will Baldwin's design of a pair of drop crotch pants made of a preppie pastel fabric dotted with a golf crest logo and pink pom pons surged ahead — by nine votes.
It didn't seem fair the runner-up design — a pair of patchwork bell bottoms by Francisco J. Castillo — wouldn't get made, especially since it ran neck-and-neck with the winner throughout the voting. But fate intervened.
When I appeared on the David Nuño & Ken Hoffman sports talk radio show on 1560 The Game to talk about the contest, Nuño, who is the father of twins and emcee of the kickoff fashion show/party, complained he didn't have a pair of bad pants to wear. So I spoke with Kay King, who chairs the HCC fashion and interior design programs, who agreed it would be a great idea to bend the rules a little and allow Castillo to make his design for Nuño.
It's great to see such creative design talent in Houston. All four finalists tackled the project with a sense of humor and a knowledge of good design — even when it's for a pair of bad pants.
