Strange bedfellows
The ultimate in high/low shopping: Neiman Marcus & Target plan holidaycollection
We know times are tough, but who would expect luxury retailer Neiman Marcus to join hands with discounter Target for a new collection?
Hold onto your credit card because Women's Wear Daily reports that the two retail chains have commissioned 24 designers to create items for a limited-edition holiday collection ranging in price from $7.99 to $499.99. Most items will be under $60.
The collaboration is the latest surprise from Neiman Marcus, which appears to be on the hunt for younger, less affluent shoppers who might one day have the means to shop regularly at the luxury retailer.
The Target + Neiman Marcus Holiday Collection will be sold beginning Dec. 1 at all 1,763 Target stores and 42 Neiman Marcus stores, as well as online at target.com and neimanmarcus.com. It will include 50 gifts in men's, women's, children's apparel and accessories as well as home decor, sporting goods, pet and electronic accessories.
Designers include Oscar de la Renta, Diane von Furstenberg, Carolina Herrera, Marc Jacobs, Tory Burch, Lela Rose, Marchesa, Judith Leiber, Proenza Schouler, Tracy Reese and Brian Atwood. Each designer will create one to three items.
In the past year Neiman's has supplanted Macy's and Piperlime as a sponsor of Project Runway, started accepting MasterCard and Visa (with Discover soon to come), and opened a Last Call Fashion Studio on Post Oak Boulevard, with clothing from name designers made specifically for the store at 30 percent off.
But luxury fans don't worry: Neiman's still plans its annual holiday catalogue with some over-the-top gifts.
