Fashion flop: Armani closes Dallas store
Another sign that Dallas isn't the fashion center it purports to be: Giorgio Armani is closing his boutique in NorthPark Center this week. NorthPark officials blame the closing on the fact that the Armani store is located only a few steps away from the Neiman Marcus store in the same mall, located in north Dallas.
"(Armani officials) feel Neiman Marcus can take care of their customers," Nancy Nasher, president of NorthPark Development Center, told Women's Wear Daily.
That's not the case in Houston, where Armani operates a Galleria boutique that carries his top-of-the-line collection for men and women, down the mall from Neiman Marcus, which also carries the high-end Armani label. Both stores appear to be thriving.
Neiman's also carries Chanel and Yves Saint Laurent, both of which have stand-alone boutiques just outside the NM mall entrance.
In addition to the Armani boutique, there are separate Galleria stores featuring Emporio Armani and A/X brands.
One theory on why Armani works better in Houston than Dallas: Houstonians have more sophisticated clothing tastes and an international clientele that favors the Armani brand.
