Recipe for Success presents the fifth annual Fashion Gene Awards, a salute to Mothers Day, in a fashion presentation May 4 at Tootsies.
Six combinations of stylish femmes will be spotlighted.
In advance of the fundraiser that includes opportunities for just the fashion show ($50) or the fashion show and dinner ($350) that follows, we share fashion insights as provided by the mother, daughter, daughter-in-law combos.

In one word describe your mother's/daughter's style:
Duyen: For Misha, sporty but elegant; for Lauren and Chloe, edgy; for Anais, street style hip.
Misha: Bold.
Lauren: Intuitive.
Chloe: Fearless.
Anais: Classy.
How has your mother/daughter influenced your fashion?
Duyen: I dress more age-appropriate around my daughters.
Misha: Her occasional all-black style is what has influenced me the most. I don't wear a lot of dresses with crazy prints and I also wear a lot of black.
Lauren: I grew up having my parents dress me wherever we went and so my entire fashion style comes from them.
Chloe: My mother's style influences me to try new things and to be creative with combinations and shapes.
Anais: My mom chooses a lot of my outfits when we go out.
What has been your mother's/daughter's biggest fashion faux pas?
Duyen: Sometimes we'll all come home from an event and they'll tell me they wore their pajamas underneath their dresses or outfits.
Misha: Ha,ha. I don't think I've ever seen my mom have a fashion faux pas!

In one word describe your mother's/daughter's style.
Jana: Elegant and confident, both daughters.
Lauren: Fresh.
Lindley: Colorful!
How has your mother/daughter influenced your fashion sense?
Jana: They keep me updated and modern.
Lauren: In the best way — she gives me wonderful hand-me-downs. It's great to be the same size.
Lindley: She has encouraged me to explore color and print.
What is your favorite outfit of your mother/daughter?
Jana: For Lauren, her Vera Wang wedding dress; for Lindley, she looks great in her short shorts and her new white dress, Iro, she bought in Paris.
Lauren: A black and white sequinned Oscar de la Renta dress.
Lindley: Impossible to choose. I love it when she wears a wide leg pant and I love her Tom Ford bomber jacket .
Who is your favorite designer?
Jana: Ralph Lauren, Valentino, Naeem Kahn, Oscar de la Renta, Chanel.
Lauren: Oscar de la Renta.
Lindley: Also impossible to choose. I love emerging designers Proenza Schouler and Rose Assoulin.

Jo Lynn: Christine is sophisticated, Kimberly is adventurous.
Christine: Classic.
Kimberly: Timeless with flair.
How has your mother/daughter influenced your fashion sense?
Jo Lynn: Christine and Kimberly both keep me on a style watch. I only have to check with my daughters to know what I need to know.
Christine: My mother has perfected how to incorporate the latest fashion pieces, yet still make the look classic.
Kimberly: I learned from my mom to be bold when it comes to fashion.
What is your favorite outfit of your mother/daughter?
Jo Lynn: Christine, her Alexander McQueen black and white dress; Kimberly, her red Alexander McQueen.
Christine: A purple Tom Ford knee length dress she had paired with an animal print Roberto Cavalli scarf.
Kimberly: I think she looks amazing in any bright colored dress and anytime she wears a pair of Valentino rock stud pumps.
Who is your favorite designer?
Jo Lynn: Tie between Roberto Cavalli and Alexander McQueen.
Christine: Alexander McQueen.
Kimberly: Valentino.

Jackie: My daughter's style is comfortable (casual).
Jillian: Fashionable.
How has your mother/daughter influenced your fashion sense?
Jackie: My daughter has taught me that a topknot can be fun, fierce and fabulous.
Jillian: I've learned to only let one piece in an outfit speak (stand out) .
What's been your mother's/daughter's major fashion faux pas?
Jackie: My daughter's biggest fashion faux pas is a pair of old white Converse sneakers.

Jackie: Bibhu Mohapatra.
Jillian: Chloe Dao.

Vanessa: Modern with a twist.
Alexa: Sexy.
How has your mother/daughter influenced your fashion sense?
Vanessa: Helped me stay current, kept my hair from getting too big.
Alexa: My mom taught me to be confident and bold in whatever I wear.
What is your favorite outfit of your mother/daughter?
Vanessa: She's one of the few people I know who looks great in yellow. So I think a yellow pique party dress.
Alexa: Red Angel Sanchez Heart Ball gown.
What has been your mother's/daughter's biggest fashion faux pas?
Vanessa: Her Abercrombie and Fitch period in the mid '90s.
Alexa: When she dressed us in matching outfits as children, or all my giant childhood bows.
Who is your favorite designer?
Vanessa: Valentino by night, Donna Karan by day.
Alexa: Dolce & Gabbana.
