Presumably sensing obvious competition from Anthropologie's new boho chic BHLDN bridal collection, Costco has announced its plans to offer designer wedding dresses at discount prices.
Although the store is known more for its in-bulk groceries (love the hummus) and bargain electronics department, Costco is set to offer a full-on wedding boutique with a traveling trunk show of designer gowns. For those brides-to-be who dream about trying on dresses on an elevated stage, surrounded by mirrors, soft lighting, family and champagne, it'll be a bubble burst.
The wholesaler will be teaming up with designer Kirstie Kelly (did you expect Vera Wang?) to offer six exclusive (only at Costco!) styles for prices ranging from $700 to $1,400.
Pop-up dressing rooms will be installed inside Costco stores and staffed with Kirstie Kelly employees. They'll even be carpeted, to distract shoppers from the fact that they're inside a Costco.
I can picture it now: Cruising the aisles in a one-stop shop of bridal convenience, where I can pick up a year's supply of guacamole, a flat screen for my new hubby, granny panties to last a lifetime AND the dress I'll don on the single-most important day of my young lady life. But I'll be careful not to let my eyes get bigger than my cart — for I'll be back for fittings!
(In fact, the dresses are cash-and-carry, to be taken from the store as-are. So add a couple hundred extra dollars for tailoring to that slashed price for a more accurate representation of what you'll end up paying.)
Wedding dresses may be new for Costco, but they're not the only bridal bargain the store offers — you can shop engagement rings, too. Just remember the four C's: Color, cut, clarity and Costco.
