Michelle Obama fave Naeem Khan ups the glamour quotient with glittery entrance-making gowns
NEW YORK — Naeem Khan really knows how to design an entrance-making gown. That's why he's been a Houston favorite among the fashion/social set and caught the eye of Michelle Obama, who increasingly has picked him as her go-to guy for special events. (The first lady wore a silver beaded Khan gown in her surprise Academy Awards appearance.)
For fall, Khan's collection is so chock-full of gasp-inducing red-carpet designs that it is going to be hard for his loyal clients to make a decision.
At a time when many designers are toning down or turning to a harder-edge look (with gowns accented with leather harnesses), Khan has revved up the glamour quotient with a collection called "Modern Opulence."
Upon gazing at one beaded gold gown, Matt Damon could be seen exclaiming, "Wow!"
Basing his looks on Erté illustrations of the 1920s and the grandeur of the Byzantine Empire, Khan featured spectacular beaded gowns with open backs and keyhold necklines that drew gasps of amazement from actor Matt Damon and wife, Luciana, who are close pals of the designer and sat holding hands on the front row next to Khan's wife, Ranjana.

“I can say, nobody has ever made my wife look more beautiful. His stuff is just so elegant and glamorous and just amazing, I love the way that it falls. I am obviously not known for my fashion sensibility, but I have really come to appreciate it more through knowing Naeem," Damon told Fern Mallis, who hosts a Sirius XM radio show called Fashion Insiders.
Khan's fall collection alternated between crystal beaded art deco creations and rich velvet gowns with antique gold Ottoman embroidery, kaftans with intricate metallic lace applique and to-the-floor velvet evening coats
Also drawing raves were a flowing chiffon gown cinched with a wide waistband of silver and a crystal-embellished bolero worn with slim black tuxedo trousers and matching overskirt made for the actress who wants to draw attention on the red carpet.
